Halo a ras
We enter a precise moment in time. We don't know if it's the instant of the beginning or the end. Space is tinged with twilight and bordering colors. Lucas de la Rubia places us on the horizon line, when the sunlight outlines it in the blink of an eye. The sunset dresses in hues of ochre, copper, violet, crimson, or gold, providing shelter to intimacy.
In "Halo a ras" el silencio resides in a place in-between, in a sort of atmospheric island between two bodies of different nature. From there, the author reflects on how we relate to the material object. To reach the piece, we must cross that interstitial boundary and pass through a barrier of silence with our own body. A simple gesture of approach activates, a spring that encourages us to dance around it. The art of bodily movement arises from the desire for interaction and exploration, eventually composing a sculptural score.
Lucas de la Rubia partly connects with the tradition of sculpture as emptiness, as unoccupied and uninhabited space of mass. He nurtures his productions through an understanding of the plastic silence of these approaches and his practice as a musician. Starting from silence, he relies on an empty space of time and lets it act with its magnetic property. The proposal introduces performative action and the installation of assembled body-instruments as musical vehicles. Although he relies on various mediums, he always does so from a sculptural mindset. The viewer is thus placed in a space of composition where, thanks to the randomness of their movements, the experience becomes a ritual dance around a volume.
His interpretation of silence as a traversed interval and musical sign underscores the value of cracks and cavities in his sculptures. Accidents of matter. Ultimately, forms conceived on the threshold between morphological figuration and abstraction, between enveloping installation and conventional exhibition. Lucas transcends the space-time dimension to compose a plastic score that requests and challenges us. That invites us to dance, halo flush with the horizon, who knows, whether at dawn or dusk.
