Entonces
Too present.
In the need for expectations and memories arises the 'then,' where we are comfortable, where we idealize what was lived, where everything was fine, or perhaps not, but it also doesn't matter because the form of memory is our own choice.
Then is the comfortable temporal space we turn to when the present feels overwhelming.
.
Then as a refuge, an expansive space where we can choose where to settle, while now is a moment, an instant too uncertain.
The idealization of the past arises as the best alternative; we all succumb to that idea. When there is no future, let there at least be the past.
Someday Now will be Then.
Uxío da Vila
Uxío da Vila's work revolves around such personal and everyday concepts as human identity, the passage of time, intimacy, the perception of reality, or memory. Graduated in Law from the University of Alcalá and winner of two Lux Photography Awards, he took his first steps in photography as a self-taught artist, always working analogically and carrying out an autobiographical oeuvre where he constantly portrays his multiple obsessions: citrus fruits, seas, landscapes, still lifes, tennis courts, bodies, marbles, or interiors that are part of a particular universe of his own, of his present, past, and future. Photography as a metaphor for the human being, a mirror of their variable and ephemeral identity where one can look and see oneself reflected or escape through distractions and interventions, papers, installations, vanishing points, compositions, or oversights. In contrast to this identity idea, Uxío da Vila also proposes a game about the authorship of the works, reflecting on how relevant this would be. An exercise that shows the true fragility of a concept like our own identity, which is actually practically an abstraction. A synthesis of his essence and his own drift.
